About Wharfedale

Gilbert Briggs founded Wharfedale in 1932 in the cellar of his house in Ilkley, in the Yorkshire dale the company is named after. He became the great popular educator of British audio: his book on loudspeakers sold in enormous numbers, and from the 1950s he staged live-versus-recorded concerts at the Royal Festival Hall and Carnegie Hall, playing an orchestra and then a recording of it through his speakers and inviting the audience to tell the difference. The Diamond, launched in 1982, became one of the highest-selling loudspeaker lines in history and is still in production in its umpteenth generation.

Briggs built his first speaker in the cellar of his house in Ilkley and went on to write the best-selling loudspeaker books of the era and to stage live-versus-recorded demonstrations in concert halls.

Briggs did more than anyone to explain hi-fi to ordinary British buyers, and the live-versus-recorded demonstrations were as much showmanship as engineering - they filled concert halls. Wharfedale, KEF and Rank found themselves connected: Raymond Cooke worked at Wharfedale before founding KEF, so the two great Kent and Yorkshire names share a bloodline.

Bought by IAG in 1997 and built in the group own factory in Shenzhen, with design and engineering in Cambridgeshire.
