About Leak

Harold Leak founded the company in London in 1934, and in 1945 the Point One amplifier took its name from its total harmonic distortion figure of 0.1 percent, a startling claim at the time. The Stereo 20 valve amplifier of the late 1950s is still restored and used. In 1961 Leak introduced the Sandwich cone, an expanded-polystyrene core between aluminium skins, an early attempt at the stiff-and-light problem every cone designer still has. IAG brought the name back in 2020 with the Stereo 130, styled after the 1960s originals.

Quoting a distortion figure in the product name was, in 1945, a marketing decision as much as an engineering one - and it worked, because it made an invisible specification into something a buyer could ask a shop about.

The original company was absorbed decades ago; IAG owns the name and relaunched it in 2020 alongside Wharfedale, Mission and Quad.
