About Bose

Amar Bose founded the company in 1964 after concluding that the loudspeakers of the day measured well and sounded wrong, and that the missing variable was the reflected sound in a real room. The 901 of 1968 pointed most of its drivers at the wall behind it and stayed in the catalogue for over 25 years. Bose also pioneered aviation noise-cancelling headsets and put the technology into consumer headphones with QuietComfort.

An MIT professor who bought a hi-fi system in 1956, was disappointed by it, and spent the rest of his life on the problem. He gave the majority of the company to MIT in 2011.

Bose occupies a peculiar place: enormous consumer recognition, and enduring scepticism from the enthusiast press over published specifications. Both halves of that reputation are part of the brand.

Privately held. Amar Bose donated a majority of non-voting shares to MIT in 2011, so the university receives dividends but cannot direct the company.
