About Bowers Wilkins

John Bowers and Roy Wilkins started from an electrical retail shop in Worthing in 1966. The company grew on research spending that was unusual for its size, and in 1979 the Matrix 801 was adopted by Abbey Road Studios and later by Decca as a mastering monitor - an association Bowers and Wilkins has held since. The Nautilus of 1993, with its four tapered tubes and snail shell curve, remains the reference design the rest of the range borrows from: the tapering tube behind each driver absorbs the rear wave instead of reflecting it back through the cone.

The two ran an electrical shop in Worthing. Bowers built speakers for a customer who left the company money in her will, and that legacy funded the first proper research.

The yellow Kevlar cone is one of the few pieces of loudspeaker engineering that became a visual trademark. And the Abbey Road connection means a great deal of well-known popular music was mastered while being monitored on B&W - the recordings were checked on the speakers, which is a different and stronger claim than a marketing endorsement.

Passed from EVA Automation to Sound United in 2020, to Masimo in 2022, and to Harman in 2025 as part of the Sound United sale - so B&W now shares an owner with JBL and Revel.

Notable models: DM70, Matrix 801, Nautilus, 800 Series Diamond, 600 Series.
