About Pro-Ject
Pro-Ject was founded in 1991, in the middle of the CD boom, to sell affordable turntables to a market that had been told it no longer wanted them. The Debut, launched in 1999, became one of the best-selling turntables ever made and set the pattern: build in Europe, keep it simple, keep it cheap enough to be a first purchase rather than a last one. The Box Design range of half-width electronics arrived in 2000 and now covers phono stages, DACs, headphone amplifiers, streamers and power amplifiers, sized so that a stack of them takes up no more room than one ordinary component.
Started the company in 1991, at the point where the record industry had written vinyl off, on the view that a well-made turntable at a sane price would outlast the compact disc. He is still chief executive.
Almost every review of a Pro-Ject component mentions the size before anything else. The Box Design cases are roughly a paperback each, which is a deliberate answer to the fact that most people no longer have a hi-fi rack.
Pro-Ject Audio Systems is a brand of Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH, the Vienna company Heinz Lichtenegger runs. Privately held.
