About Sony

Sony was founded in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita in a bombed-out Tokyo department store building. Its two largest contributions to how people listen are the Walkman of 1979, which made music portable and personal, and the compact disc, developed jointly with Philips and launched in 1982 with the CDP-101 - the format that carried recorded music for twenty years. Sony also owns one of the largest recorded-music catalogues in the world, so it sits on both sides of the industry.

Ibuka was the engineer, Morita the commercial mind. Morita insisted on a name that could be pronounced anywhere, which is why a Japanese company took a Latin root.

The Walkman changed the social meaning of listening: music stopped being something a room did together and became something a person did alone in public. Very few consumer products have altered behaviour that fundamentally.

Notable models: TPS-L2 Walkman, CDP-101, SS-AR1, ES series amplifiers, WH-1000X headphones.
