About Polk Audio

Polk Audio started in Baltimore in 1972 and grew into one of the defining mass-market American speaker brands. Its most interesting engineering was SDA, the Stereo Dimensional Array, which fed each channel a delayed and inverted portion of the other to cancel the crosstalk that reaches each ear from the wrong speaker - an attempt to give loudspeakers the channel separation headphones get for free. SDA models are still sought after and modified by enthusiasts.

Three Johns Hopkins graduates who started by building speakers for a Baltimore renaissance fair. Sandy Gross went on to co-found Definitive Technology and GoldenEar.

Polk is one of the American brands most people over forty had in the house at some point, which gives it a nostalgia value the specifications do not capture.

Part of Sound United; passed to Masimo in 2022 and to Harman in 2025.

Notable models: Monitor series, SDA SRS, RTi, Legend L100, Signature Elite.
