About Denon

Denon traces to 1910 and the earliest Japanese record industry - it made discs and recording equipment long before it made hi-fi. In 1972 it put the first commercial PCM digital recorder into use for classical sessions, more than a decade before the compact disc reached shops, so a number of early CD releases were Denon digital masters. The DL-103 moving-coil cartridge, designed for NHK broadcast use in 1962, is still made and still sold.

The DL-103 is one of very few audio products with an unbroken production run of over sixty years, and it exists because a national broadcaster needed a rugged cartridge, not because a hi-fi company wanted a halo product.

Merged with Marantz to form D and M Holdings, which became Sound United, sold to Masimo in 2022 and to Harman in 2025.
