About Sonos

Sonos shipped its first system in 2005, several years before streaming services were mainstream, and solved the hard part - reliable synchronised playback across rooms with a controller that ordinary people could use. Almost every wireless multiroom system since has followed its shape. The company has since had a difficult relationship with its own installed base over app rewrites and product end-of-life decisions.

Sonos is the rare audio company whose main achievement is software, and its 2024 app rewrite became a widely reported cautionary tale about breaking a product that people had already built their homes around.
