About Naim

Julian Vereker founded Naim in 1973 after trying and failing to buy equipment that could record and replay a live performance convincingly. Naim went its own way on almost everything: DIN rather than RCA connectors, its own cable requirements, and an upgrade path built on adding external power supplies rather than replacing the box. The NAIT integrated amplifier of 1983 was small and modestly powered and became a cult object. The Mu-so wireless speaker took the brand to a much wider audience from 2014.

A racing driver and self-taught engineer who started by building amplifiers to record live music properly.

Naim is at the centre of the British flat-earth school of the 1980s, which argued that rhythm and timing matter more than frequency response or soundstage - a genuine philosophical split with the rest of the industry, usually demonstrated with a Linn turntable, a Naim amplifier and a pair of small speakers.

Merged with Focal in 2011 under a shared French parent; Naim engineering and manufacture stayed in Salisbury.
