About Russound

Russound started in 1967 making the unglamorous parts of a distributed audio system - volume controls and speaker selectors - and it still sells that kind of thing today. The turn came in 1987 when Maureen Baldwin, whose background was in sheet-metal manufacturing, bought the company and put that expertise into how the products were designed and built. The line grew from passive distribution hardware into zone amplifiers, keypads, streaming sources and the apps that drive them. The route to market never changed: an installer specifies Russound, and the customer mostly never sees the brand.

The founder is not named on the company's own history page. What that page does record is the second start: Maureen Baldwin bought Russound in 1987 and still owns it, which makes it a rare woman-owned manufacturer in this industry, and Joe Brouillet ran it from 1989 to 2009 and rebuilt its distribution around the custom-installation trade.

Multi-zone amplifiers are rated differently from hi-fi ones, and Russound is a good example of why the distinction matters here. Its power figures are quoted with a single zone driven, not with every channel running, so they are not comparable with an all-channels rating from a stereo amplifier.

Privately held and owned by Maureen Baldwin since 1987.

Notable models: MCA multiroom controllers, XSource streamers, Acclaim in-wall speakers, D-series multi-zone amplifiers.
