About Sennheiser

Fritz Sennheiser founded the company in 1945 with seven engineers, and in 1968 it produced the HD 414, the first open-back headphone, which sold in the millions and created the category. The HD 600 line has been a studio and enthusiast reference since the 1990s. The Orpheus electrostatic systems, in 1991 and again in 2015, were built as statements of what was technically possible rather than as products with a market.

A doctor of engineering who started with seven colleagues in a farmhouse in Lower Saxony immediately after the war.

The yellow foam earpads of the HD 414 are as period-defining as the JBL orange grille, and Sennheiser microphones are standard equipment on stages and in broadcast worldwide.

The consumer audio division, including headphones and the AMBEO soundbars, went to the Swiss hearing-technology group Sonova - announced in May 2021 and completed in March 2022, with a perpetual licence to use the Sennheiser name on consumer products. Sennheiser electronic itself stayed family-owned and kept the professional and business-communications side.

Notable models: HD 414, HD 600, HD 800, Orpheus HE 1, MD 421 microphone, Ambeo soundbar.
