About Velodyne

Velodyne built its reputation on servo control: an accelerometer mounted on the driver cone measures what the cone is actually doing and the amplifier corrects the difference from the input signal hundreds of times a second, cutting distortion at the very low frequencies where cones misbehave most. The same founder later spun the company engineering into lidar sensors for self-driving cars, an unusually large pivot out of a subwoofer company.

Hall later used the company engineering to develop spinning laser scanners for autonomous vehicles, and Velodyne Lidar became far larger than the audio business.
