About Magnepan

Jim Winey founded Magnepan in 1969 with a completely different premise from box speakers: a very large, very light Mylar diaphragm with conductive traces bonded to it, driven across its whole surface by rows of magnets, radiating equally forward and backward. There is no cabinet to resonate and almost no moving mass. The trade-offs are equally distinctive - the panels are large, need space away from walls, are power-hungry and image in a way people either love or cannot live with.

A 3M engineer who built the first panel in his basement after concluding that a large, light diaphragm would beat a small, heavy cone.

Magnepan has kept the same basic technology, the same factory and roughly the same prices for over fifty years, in an industry that reinvents itself constantly. The entry-level LRS is a regular answer to the question of what to buy when budget is small and the room is right.
