About Yamaha

Yamaha began in 1887 building reed organs in Hamamatsu and is now the largest musical instrument manufacturer in the world - pianos, guitars, brass, drums, synthesisers - with hi-fi as one branch of that. Its NS-1000M of 1974 used beryllium midrange and tweeter domes, decades before beryllium became a high-end talking point. The NS-10M, a small and famously unforgiving monitor, ended up in more recording studios than almost any other speaker.

A clockmaker who was asked to repair a reed organ, decided he could build a better one, and carried the parts over a mountain pass to Tokyo to have it evaluated.

The NS-10M was never designed as a studio monitor - it was a bookshelf hi-fi speaker that engineers adopted precisely because it sounded harsh and exposed problems, on the logic that a mix that worked on an NS-10 would work anywhere. The tissue paper taped over the tweeter to tame it became a studio ritual. Yamaha also built the DX7 synthesiser, which defined the sound of 1980s pop as thoroughly as any instrument ever has.
