About ELAC

ELAC began in 1926 building echo-sounding and sonar equipment in Kiel, moved into record players and cartridges after the war, and into loudspeakers proper later. Its distinctive part is the JET tweeter, an air-motion transformer whose pleated diaphragm squeezes air rather than pushing it. In 2015 ELAC hired Andrew Jones, previously of KEF, Infinity and Pioneer, and the Debut and Uni-Fi ranges he designed reset expectations of what an entry-level speaker should cost.

A sonar company that ended up making budget hi-fi is an unusual arc, and the marine division still exists separately - the loudspeaker business is the branch, not the trunk.
