About Tannoy

Tannoy was founded in 1926 and made its name in public address before hi-fi. In 1947 it introduced the Dual Concentric driver, which puts a compression tweeter behind the bass cone firing through the pole piece, so the whole assembly is a single point source - an idea KEF, Fyne and others still work with. The big cabinets of the 1950s and 1960s, the Autograph and Westminster, are corner horns of a scale nobody builds any more.

Fountain started with a tantalum-lead alloy rectifier, and the trade name for that alloy became the company name.

Tannoy is one of very few brand names to become a common noun: in British English a tannoy is any public address system, regardless of who made it. That happened because Tannoy PA equipment was standard in British factories, stations and military installations for decades. Tannoy monitors were also used at Abbey Road and in Decca studios during the 1960s.

Bought by the Music Group, now Music Tribe, in 2015. Scottish hi-fi production was largely wound down afterwards, and much of the surviving output is professional and commercial audio.
