About TEAC

TEAC built its reputation on tape. Its open-reel decks were standard equipment in the 1970s, and its Tascam division produced the Portastudio, a cassette-based four-track that let musicians record multitrack demos at home for the first time. That machine has a serious claim to having changed popular music, because it removed the studio from the process of writing and arranging. TEAC also owns Esoteric, one of the most expensive Japanese high-end brands.

Bruce Springsteen Nebraska was recorded on a Tascam Portastudio, and a great deal of 1980s and 1990s indie and demo culture ran through the same kind of machine.

Owns Tascam, its professional and recording division, and Esoteric, its high-end division.
