About Marantz

Saul Marantz built the Audio Consolette preamplifier in his New York home in 1953 because he could not buy what he wanted, and the demand for copies started the company. The valve-era Model 7 preamplifier and Model 9 monoblocks are still restored and traded at high prices. Marantz was sold to Superscope in 1964, and its centre of gravity moved to Japan, where Ken Ishiwata acted as the brand voice and tuner from 1978 until 2019 and gave a long series of models their character.

A commercial artist and keen amateur musician who built a preamplifier for himself because nothing on sale satisfied him.

Ken Ishiwata is one of very few audio engineers who became a public figure in his own right - the KI Signature and KI Ruby models carry his initials, and his death in 2019 was treated as an event across the industry.

Sold to Superscope in 1964, later Japanese-owned, merged with Denon into D and M Holdings, then Sound United, Masimo, and Harman in 2025. Engineering has been Japanese for decades.

Notable models: Audio Consolette, Model 7, Model 9, PM-10, Model 30, Cinema AV receivers.
