About Spendor

Spencer Hughes developed cone materials in the BBC research department and left to found Spendor with his wife Dorothy in 1969. The BC1 that followed became one of the defining British monitors of the 1970s. Spendor is one of the handful of companies licensed to build the BBC LS3/5A, and the Classic range still uses thin-wall damped cabinets built to BBC principles. Philip Swift, previously of Audiolab, bought the company in 2001 and added the more modern A-Line and D-Line alongside the Classics.

SPENcer and DORothy. Spencer Hughes worked in the BBC engineering research department and developed the Bextrene cone used in BBC monitors.

Spendor, Harbeth, Rogers and Chartwell all trace back to BBC research department people going into business for themselves, which is an unusually direct case of publicly funded engineering seeding a private industry.

Bought in 2001 by Philip Swift, who had co-founded Audiolab.

Notable models: BC1, SP1/2, LS3/5A, Classic series, A-Line, D-Line.
