About Victrola

The Victrola name belongs to the Victor Talking Machine Company, which in 1906 launched a gramophone with the horn folded inside a wooden cabinet - so the machine looked like furniture instead of laboratory equipment. That single design decision put recorded music into ordinary sitting rooms. The name is now used by a separate modern company on entry-level turntables and retro-styled systems.

Johnson founded the Victor Talking Machine Company, whose Victrola put the horn inside a cabinet and made the gramophone a piece of furniture.

The Victor trademark - the dog Nipper listening to a horn, His Master Voice - is one of the oldest and most recognised trademarks in the world, and it came from this lineage. Be careful on brand pages not to imply the modern company is the same business.

The modern Victrola is run by Victrola Brands, formerly Innovative Technology Electronics, and has no corporate continuity with the Victor Talking Machine Company.
