Stereo Receivers - frequently asked questions

What is a Stereo Receiver?

A stereo receiver is an integrated amplifier with a radio tuner built in - FM, DAB or internet radio depending on the model. Everything an integrated amp does, plus broadcast, in a single chassis.

How much power do these have?

The 16 Stereo Receivers listed here run from 60 to 200 watts RMS into 8 ohms, with a median of 100 watts. For most rooms and most speakers the median is already more than enough - doubling the watts buys about 3dB, which is a small step in loudness. Sensitivity and impedance decide more than the number on the box.

What do they cost?

Currently $248 to $9,500, with a median of $875. Prices are the current asking price we hold, not a sale price, and they change - check the retailer before deciding.

Which features should I check for?

14 of 16 have a built-in DAC, so a computer, TV or CD transport can connect digitally; 15 have a phono stage for a turntable; 10 also stream over the network.

What makes a receiver different from an integrated amplifier?

The tuner. Otherwise a stereo receiver does the same job - it selects sources, sets the volume and drives the speakers. If you will never listen to radio, an integrated amplifier gives you the same thing without paying for a section you do not use.
