About Focal

Jacques Mahul founded Focal in 1979 to make drive units, then complete speakers under JMlab. The company committed early to building its own transducers, and the two that define it are the inverted-dome tweeter - a dome pushed inward rather than outward, later made in pure beryllium - and the W sandwich cone of glass fibre skins around a foam core. Focal also supplies car audio to several manufacturers and has become a serious headphone maker.

Mahul was a hi-fi journalist and engineer who started by making drive units, then complete speakers under the JMlab name.

Beryllium is toxic to work with and expensive to form, and only a handful of companies have ever used it in a production tweeter. Focal doing it in volume is a large part of why the brand reads as French engineering rather than French styling.

Focal and Naim sit in the same French group, which is why Focal speakers and Naim electronics are so often demonstrated together.
