About KEF

Raymond Cooke founded KEF in 1961 in a Nissen hut on the site of the Kent Engineering and Foundry works, having worked at the BBC and at Wharfedale. KEF built its reputation on measurement and on drive units - it supplied the drivers for the BBC LS3/5A, the small monitor that became a cult object in its own right. In 1988 it introduced Uni-Q, mounting the tweeter in the throat of the mid-bass cone so both radiate from the same point, and that idea now runs through nearly the whole catalogue. In 2020 the LS50 Meta added Metamaterial Absorption Technology, a maze-like structure behind the tweeter that absorbs the rear wave rather than reflecting it.

Cooke came from the BBC engineering department and then Wharfedale, and brought a measurement-first approach with him.

KEF drivers inside the LS3/5A place it in the middle of British broadcast history, and the LS50, launched in 2012 for the company fiftieth anniversary, is one of very few modern speakers to become a genuine reference point across the whole industry.

Bought by the Hong Kong Gold Peak group in 1992; engineering and the flagship builds stayed in Maidstone.
