About Technics

Technics was created in 1965 as Matsushita premium audio brand and pioneered the direct-drive turntable with the SP-10 in 1970. The SL-1200 that followed in 1972 was designed as a hi-fi deck, but its high torque, instant start and robustness made it the machine DJs adopted, and it stayed in production in successive versions for decades. Panasonic retired the brand in 2010 and brought it back in 2014, including a reissued SL-1200 after sustained demand.

The SL-1200 is one of the few pieces of consumer hi-fi that became a musical instrument. Hip hop turntablism, disco beatmatching and most of club culture were built on a pair of them - scratching and cueing are physically possible because of the direct-drive motor and the pitch fader. Panasonic discontinuing it in 2010 caused a genuine outcry, and the reissue was a response to that.
