DALI Sonik 5 5.1 at $4,800 vs the Oberon 5 5.1 It Replaces: Same Specs on Paper, 20 to 50 Percent More, Piece by Piece

What Hi-Fi gave the DALI Sonik 5 5.1 five stars. We hold all four speakers and the four from the Oberon 5 5.1 it replaces. What changed, piece by piece.

Published: October 13, 2026

What Hi-Fi reviewed the DALI Sonik 5 5.1 package on 12 October and gave it five stars. It is the package that replaces the Oberon 5 5.1, which won the same magazine’s award for years. The new set is a pair of Sonik 5 floor-standers at the front, a pair of Sonik 1 stand-mounts as surrounds, the Sonik Cinema centre, and the Sub E-9 F, a subwoofer DALI launched in 2013. The old set was the Oberon 5, the Oberon 1, the Oberon Vokal centre, and the same subwoofer.

We hold all eight. So instead of telling you what the review says (it is very positive, and the sound section is worth reading), I lined the old package up against the new one, piece by piece, with the numbers from our own database.

Quick facts
  • $4,800 in the US, GBP 2,199 in the UK. What Hi-Fi puts the four US pieces at $4,800 bought separately, with no bundle on offer. Richer Sounds sells the UK bundle for GBP 2,199, which is about $2,950 at today’s rate. The same speakers cost roughly 60 percent more in the US.
  • The fronts are the same speaker on paper. Sonik 5 and Oberon 5: 39 to 26,000 Hz, 88 dB, 6 ohms, 30 to 150 watts, two 5.25 inch wood-fibre woofers, a 29 mm soft dome, 10.8 kg. The Sonik costs $1,800 a pair, the Oberon was $1,499.
  • The centre is the piece that changed. The Sonik Cinema is 129 mm wider and 2.4 kg heavier than the Oberon Vokal, moves from 4 ohms to 6, and costs $900 against $599. That is the 50 percent.
  • The subwoofer did not change. The Sub E-9 F is a 9 inch, 170 watt design from 2013 that reaches 37 Hz. It comes in black or white only, so it will not match an oak or walnut set.
  • Readers are already comparing the two. Oberon 5 against Sonik 5 has been the single most-opened comparison on this site since the start of August, ahead of every other pair in the Sonik and Oberon series and every pair from any other brand.

The fronts: Sonik 5 vs Oberon 5

DALI replaced the Oberon range with Sonik in February. The Sonik 5 is the smallest floor-stander in the new range and it is a very small floor-stander: 824 mm tall and a 16 cm wide cabinet, the same footprint as the Oberon 5 it replaces (the 250 mm width on our page is across the outrigger feet, which the Oberon did not have). Every published number is the same or within rounding. The crossover moved from 2,400 Hz to 2,200 Hz and the weight went from 10.80 to 10.82 kg. That is the whole spec-sheet difference.

What did change is the price. The Oberon 5 launched at $1,499 a pair in 2018. The Sonik 5 is $1,800 at Crutchfield today, in all four finishes, which is 20 percent more. What Hi-Fi says the new one sounds better, and I have no reason to doubt them, but you cannot see it in a spec table, and that is the honest reason this pair has been the most-opened comparison on the site for two months. People want to know if the number on the price tag bought anything they can measure. It did not.

The surrounds: Sonik 1 vs Oberon 1

Same story, smaller box. The Sonik 1 and Oberon 1 share a 5.25 inch woofer, a 29 mm dome, a 2,800 Hz crossover, 51 to 26,000 Hz, 86 dB and 6 ohms. The Sonik 1 is 4 mm narrower and 80 grams lighter. It is $900 a pair against the Oberon 1’s $750, again 20 percent more. As a surround speaker on a shelf or a wall hook (both have keyhole eyelets on the back), none of that matters much. As a stereo pair for a small room, which is what the Oberon 1 was mostly bought for, the 86 dB sensitivity is the figure to watch: it wants more amplifier than its size suggests.

The centre: Sonik Cinema vs Oberon Vokal, the one real change

This is the piece DALI actually redesigned, and it shows in the table. The Oberon Vokal was a 443 mm wide, 7.45 kg box at 4 ohms. The Sonik Cinema is 572 mm wide, 9.82 kg, and 6 ohms like the rest of the range, so a budget receiver sees the same load across all five channels. Both use two 5.25 inch woofers and the same 29 mm dome, both are rated 89.5 dB, and the bass limit is 46 Hz against 47 Hz. What Hi-Fi calls it “proportionally the most substantial speaker in the system” and that is exactly what the dimensions say.

It is also where the price moved most: $900 against $599, a rise of 50 percent. Spread across the three speaker types, the new package costs $752 more than the old one before the subwoofer, up 26 percent on $2,848.

The subwoofer: the same Sub E-9 F, thirteen years on

Both packages use the Sub E-9 F. It is a 9 inch long-stroke paper driver with a 170 watt Class D amplifier in a 307 x 288 x 311 mm box, rated 37 to 200 Hz and 111 dB maximum, weighing 11 kg. DALI introduced it in 2013 and it has outlived two generations of the speakers it is sold with. What Hi-Fi’s only two complaints about the whole package are both about this box: other subwoofers at the price dig deeper, and it comes only in black or white, so it will not match the oak or walnut finishes of the speakers. DALI offers the larger Sub E-12 F in the same range, which reaches 28 Hz with a 12 inch driver.

Where the $4,800 comes from

What Hi-Fi quotes $4,800 for the four US pieces bought separately. Crutchfield lists the Sonik 5 at $1,800, the Sonik 1 at $900 and the Sonik Cinema at $900, which is $3,600, so the magazine is counting about $1,200 for the subwoofer. DALI does not print a US price for the Sub E-9 F on its site and none of the big US dealers stock it, so that is the one figure in this post I could not check directly. Even at the three-speaker total of $3,600 the US buyer pays more than the whole UK bundle.

The UK numbers are GBP 2,396 for the parts and GBP 2,199 for the Richer Sounds bundle. Australia is AU$4,596 for the parts. The US figure is the outlier, and What Hi-Fi says so itself: at $4,800 the package is still good, but it is no longer the obvious bargain it is at home.

What it asks of your receiver

Nothing demanding. The Sonik 5 and Sonik 1 are 88 and 86 dB, all five speakers are 6 ohms, and DALI’s recommended range is 30 to 150 watts for the fronts and 25 to 100 for the surrounds. Of the 58 home theatre receivers we hold, the cheapest five-channel models start at $400 with the Yamaha RX300A at 70 watts, and the Denon AVR-S670H at $649 and 75 watts is the sort of thing What Hi-Fi would pair it with. For a stereo amplifier to drive just the Sonik 5s, the amp-speaker matcher takes the 88 dB and 6 ohm figures and lists what we hold that fits.

DALI Oberon 5 in black ash, the 2018 floor-stander the Sonik 5 replaces, now open-box stock only in the US

Who this package is not for

Anyone with a big room. The fronts are 83 cm tall with two 5.25 inch woofers, and the subwoofer stops at 37 Hz. What Hi-Fi tested it in a normal living room and loved it there. In a dedicated cinema room, or anything over about 30 square metres, this is a system that will run out of scale before it runs out of quality. The Sonik 7 with 7 inch woofers is the next step up at $2,800 a pair.

Anyone in the US expecting the UK price. At $4,800 you are paying around 60 percent more than a British buyer for the same boxes. There is no bundle discount, and the Oberon package it replaces is now open-box stock only at Crutchfield, so you cannot simply buy the old one instead.

Anyone who wants a matching sub. The E-9 F is black or white. If you want the oak or walnut speakers, the subwoofer will not match, and the deeper E-12 F has the same two finishes.

What I take from it

DALI did not change the Sonik 5 or the Sonik 1 in any way a spec sheet can show, and it changed the centre a lot. If you own an Oberon 5 5.1 there is no reason in these numbers to replace it. If you are buying new, the Sonik package is what is on sale, and at the UK price it is a very easy recommendation. At the US price it is a good system that costs what a bigger one would.

Every speaker named here is on the DALI brand page, 57 models in all, and any two of them can be compared side by side.

If you have heard the Sonik 5 next to the Oberon 5, did you hear the difference What Hi-Fi describes, or did they sound like the same speaker to you too?
