Read the bass line first. The BR04 is rated down to 44 Hz and the BR05 to 42 Hz. That is a 2 Hz difference for $350, and on paper that is close to nothing.
But low-frequency extension is not what a bigger woofer mainly buys. It buys cone area, and cone area is what lets a speaker play bass loud without straining. By nominal size, a 21 cm cone has about 70 percent more area than the 16 cm one in the BR04. The box grows to match. The BR05 holds about 51 litres against the BR04’s 29, which is 73 percent more, and it weighs 14.6 kg against 8.6.
The size drawing shows the rest. The BR05 is 36 percent wider than the BR04, which is the number that matters on a shelf or a narrow stand. Treat it as a standmount, not a bookshelf speaker.
This is where the BR05 gets interesting. We list 203 passive standmounts at $1,500 a pair or less. Only six have an 8-inch woofer, and one of those is an Aperion surround speaker, so really five. The BR05 is the second cheapest of them:
The two Monitor Audios are conventional modern boxes. The BR05’s real rivals are the other two, because they are big, wood-sided, retro-looking speakers too. Both are among the most-read standmounts on this site. Of the 368 passive standmounts readers opened since August, the Rebellion is ninth and the Linton is 21st.

The Klipsch Rebellion costs $200 more. It is rated at 95 dB, five more than the BR05, so it plays as loud on about a third of the amplifier power. In exchange it is rated only down to 60 Hz, and its impedance dips to 3.3 ohms against the BR05’s 4.7. It is the pick for a small amplifier and loud listening. It is not the pick for deep bass without a subwoofer.
The Wharfedale Linton costs $501 more and is the biggest of the three, at about 61 litres and 18.4 kg. It has the same 90 dB sensitivity as the BR05 and is rated to 40 Hz. It is a three-way, with a separate midrange, and its impedance is 6 ohms nominal and 3.5 at its lowest. The BR05 gets you most of the Linton’s size and bass for two-thirds of the price.
One warning about those bass figures. Triangle quotes 42 Hz at +/-3 dB. We do not hold the tolerance behind the Klipsch and Wharfedale numbers, and makers do not all measure the same way. Read a few hertz either way as a rough guide, not a ranking.
What Hi-Fi names the Acoustic Energy AE3000 Mk2 as the BR05’s main rival. We do not hold that one yet, so I cannot put it in the table.

What the BR05 is not for
Small spaces. At 300 mm wide and 345 mm deep, it will not go on a normal bookshelf, and it should not. It needs a solid stand or a wide piece of furniture.
Anyone counting the stand money. Add the $299 S03 stands and a pair costs $1,298. For $400 more, Triangle’s own Borea BR08 floorstander is $1,698 a pair, needs no stands, and is rated to 40 Hz at 92 dB. Its impedance does dip to 3 ohms, though, which asks more of a cheap amplifier. The BR05 vs BR08 page has the full table.
Anyone who needs deeper bass than the BR04 for the money. 2 Hz is not a reason to spend $350. If extension is the goal, a subwoofer does more for the same money. The BR05 is for people who want the bass they already get to sound bigger and less strained at volume.
Anyone wanting a better tweeter. The BR05 uses the same 25 mm silk dome as the rest of the Borea range. The upgrade is all below 1.7 kHz.

What amplifier the BR05 needs
This is the easy part. At 90 dB and 8 ohms, with a minimum of 4.7 ohms, the BR05 is a friendly load. Triangle recommends 25 to 130 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Most integrated amplifiers and stereo receivers on sale will drive it without trouble. If you want to check a specific amplifier against your room size, the amp-speaker matcher works it out from the BR05’s sensitivity and impedance.
The Borea series page has every Borea model we hold, and the BR05 against BR04 page has the full spec table side by side.
The Borea BR05 is a $999 standmount with an 8-inch woofer, a 51 litre box and the same easy 90 dB, 8 ohm load as the rest of the range. Over the BR04 it buys cone area and box size, not bass extension. Among the 8-inch standmounts we hold under $1,500 it is the cheapest of the big retro ones, below the Klipsch Rebellion and the Wharfedale Linton.

Bigger box and more cone for $350, or keep the money for a subwoofer? Which would you do with the BR04 already on your stands?
