The N22 is an integrated amplifier by Audioengine that delivers 22 watts x 2 channels into 8 ohms. It was released in October 2010. It is a 2-channel design using a Class A/B output stage. A minimum impedance of 4 ohms makes it compatible with a wide range of loudspeakers. The Audioengine N22 has an MSRP of $199.

Audioengine later replaced the Audioengine N22 with the Audioengine N22 G2. Follow the link to read our in-depth comparison of these speakers:

Performance Specs

One of the most important factors when deciding on an integrated amplifier is its power ratings and compatibility with your speaker's impedance requirements. The Audioengine N22 is rated at 22 watts RMS into 8-ohms. Audioengine provides this wattage at a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of 0.02% which is an important indicator of distortion at the given values (lower THD is better).

Here are the main highlights of its performance specs:

  • 22 watts into 8-ohms (20 Hz-22 kHz) at 0.02%
  • 4-ohms Min Impedance (allows compatibility with a wide range of loudspeakers)
  • 95dB Signal to Noise Ratio

Which speakers suit the Audioengine N22?

22 W into 8 ohms, rated down to 4 ohms. We rank every passive speaker we cover against it on power, impedance safety and current delivery.

We check power, impedance safety and current delivery - not just watts.

Need more power?

Audioengine N22 is rated at 22 watts into 8 ohms, which puts it in our Up to 60 watts band. The next band up is 61 to 90 watts, which is worth about 3.9dB more output. That is a real difference in headroom on peaks, and a modest one in how loud the system plays - power and loudness are not the same thing.

  • FiiO AIR AMP – 90 watts, $300 compare
  • Sony STR-DH190 – 90 watts, $248 compare
  • Yamaha A-S501 – 85 watts, $550 compare

Before buying watts, check what your speakers actually need: the amp and speaker matcher works it out from their sensitivity, impedance and your room.

When pairing the Audioengine N22 with a passive Bookshelf (Stand mount) or Passive Floor Standing (Tower) speaker, you have to check if their Max Power Range is below the max wattage of the amp for the given impedance levels. Operating your amp outside of this max range may damage the speakers.

What size of room is the Audioengine N22 Amplifier good for?

Bluetooth Connectivity

Audioengine N22 doesn't have bluetooth connectivity feature. In order to stream your music via bluetooth, the easiest way is to connect an external bluetooth receiver to your Audioengine N22. Two bluetooth receivers that we recommend are the iFi Zen Blue V2 and the Audioengine B1.

Among the amps in the same price range, these are the 5 amps that have Bluetooth Connectivity:

  • WiiM Amp - MSRP 299$ - Compare w/ N22
  • OSD Nero Stream XD - MSRP 240$ - Compare w/ N22
  • Audioengine N22 G2 - MSRP 269$ - Compare w/ N22
  • Yamaha R-S202 - MSRP 250$ - Compare w/ N22
  • Sony STR-DH190 - MSRP 248$ - Compare w/ N22

Phono Input

Audioengine N22 doesn't have a phono input so in order to play your vinyl albums, Audioengine N22 has to be paired with a Phono Preamp that is MM (Moving Magnet) or/and MC (Moving COil) depending on your cartridge type.

Subwoofer Output

Audioengine N22 has Stereo RCA preamp outputs which can be used to connect to a powered subwoofer via an RCA cable ( as long as your sub supports this connection).
Check our Powered Subwoofers page to find a subwoofer that will work with Audioengine N22 amp and your speakers.

Audioengine N22 External Dimensions and Weight

Audioengine N22 has external dimensions of (H x W x D) 7-1/4inch x 4-1/16inch x 7-5/8inch (185.0mm x 104.0mm x 194.0mm ). The unit weighs 1.61 kg (3.6 lbs).
