Made by NAD · Canada · since 1972 · sold through dealers

The Masters Series M33 is a streaming integrated amplifier by NAD that delivers 200 watts x 2 channels into 8 ohms and 380 watts x 2 channels into 4 ohms. It was released in July 2020. It is a 2-channel design using a Class D output stage. Bridged to mono it delivers 640 watts into 8 ohms in bridged mono mode, which is the usual way to use a pair of these on a demanding speaker. A minimum impedance of 4 ohms makes it compatible with a wide range of loudspeakers. It has a built-in DAC (32-bit/384kHz ESS Sabre), so you can play digital sources directly with no separate DAC unit needed. It also has a phono input, so a turntable can connect straight to it. The NAD Masters Series M33 has an MSRP of $6,499.

NAD later replaced the NAD Masters Series M33 with the NAD Masters Series M33 V2. Follow the link to read our in-depth comparison of these speakers:

Performance Specs

One of the most important factors when deciding on an integrated amplifier is its power ratings and compatibility with your speaker's impedance requirements. The NAD Masters Series M33 is rated at 200 watts RMS into 8-ohms. NAD provides this wattage at a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of 0.003% which is an important indicator of distortion at the given values (lower THD is better).

Here are the main highlights of its performance specs:

  • 200 watts into 8-ohms (20 Hz-20 kHz) at 0.003%
  • 380 watts into 4-ohms
  • 4-ohms Min Impedance (allows compatibility with a wide range of loudspeakers)
  • 120dB Signal to Noise Ratio

Which speakers suit the NAD Masters Series M33?

200 W into 8 ohms, 380 W into 4, rated down to 4 ohms. We rank every passive speaker we cover against it on power, impedance safety and current delivery.

We check power, impedance safety and current delivery - not just watts.

Need more power?

NAD Masters Series M33 is rated at 200 watts into 8 ohms, which puts it in our Over 180 watts band. That is the top band we cover, so there is no step up from here - if it is not enough, the answer is more sensitive speakers or a smaller room, not more watts.

When pairing the NAD Masters Series M33 with a passive Bookshelf (Stand mount) or Passive Floor Standing (Tower) speaker, you have to check if their Max Power Range is below the max wattage of the amp for the given impedance levels. Operating your amp outside of this max range may damage the speakers.

What size of room is the NAD Masters Series M33 Amplifier good for?

An essential deciding factor is the size of the room in which you intend to employ the NAD Masters Series M33 amplifier. Here, taking into account its maximum power parameters, we analyzed its applicability to various size environments:

NAD Masters Series M33 Pros and Cons

Drawn from the published figures on this page, not from listening.

  • ✓Power nearly doubles into a harder load, 200 watts into 8 ohms rising to 380 into 4, which points to a power supply with real current in reserve.
  • ✓200 watts per channel into 8 ohms is more than most rooms and most speakers will ever ask for.
  • ✓Class D output stage, so it runs cool and wastes little power as heat - which is how it fits in a small case.
  • ✓Signal-to-noise ratio of 120dB, so the amplifier itself should be inaudible between tracks.
  • ✓Distortion is specified at 0.003%, an order of magnitude below what is generally held to be audible.
  • ✓Built-in DAC handling 24-bit / 192, so a TV, computer or streamer can connect digitally with nothing in between.
  • ✓Digital inputs cover 2 optical, 2 coaxial and USB.
  • ✓Phono stage built in (MM,MC), for moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges alike.
  • ✓Streams over the network without a separate streamer: AirPlay 2, Roon and BluOS.
  • ✓Bluetooth (version 4.0 and AptX HD) for playing straight from a phone.
  • ✓Pre-outs (Stereo RCA, Sub) leave room to add a power amplifier or an active subwoofer later.
  • ✓A and B speaker terminals, for a second pair or for bi-wiring.
  • ✓Headphone output (1/4).
  • ✓Has tone controls.
  • ✓Detachable mains lead (IEC 3-prong).
  • Nothing the published specs count against it.
