Frequency Response

RP-8263FA has a frequency range of 35-25k Hz whereas RP-5203C has a frequency range of 56-25k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 35Hz, the RP-8263FA can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the RP-5203C's min frequency of 56Hz.

The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Floor-standing class in our database.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

RP-8263FA and RP-5203C have the same Impedance of 8 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. RP-8263FA sensitivity is rated at 98 dB and the RP-5203C's is at 94 dB. This 4 dB difference makes the Klipsch RP-8263FA a more sensitive speaker compared to Klipsch RP-5203C, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

RP-8263FA can handle a max power of 150 watts RMS, whereas RP-5203C has a max power handling value of 100 watts RMS, 50 watts less than the RP-8263FA.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Which plays louder on your amplifier?

Starting with a popular amplifier - change it to the one you own, or any you are considering, and watch both numbers move.

Klipsch RP-8263FA

Klipsch RP-5203C

Input Type and Bi-Amping / Bi-Wiring

RP-8263FA features Binding post posts which make bi-amping or bi-wiring possible. RP-5203C has a Binding post which doesn't feature bi-amping/bi-wiring.

Cabinet Type and Port Position

Both RP-8263FA and RP-5203C have rear firing ports. Rear ported speakers generally need more room between the backside of the speaker and the wall compared to sealed and front/bottom ported speakers. Placing the speakers too close to the walls may cause the bass to sound boomy.

If you are limited in space and can't get the speakers away from the backwall, check our Speakers with Front Firing Ports page.

Physical Specs

The size of a speaker can sometimes be an important decision factor due to space constraints or in some cases purely for esthetic reasons. In this section, we are going to compare Klipsch RP-8263FA's and Klipsch RP-5203C's external dimensions. Klipsch RP-8263FA has external dimensions of 1095.0 x 275.0 x 528.0mm (43-1/8 x 10-13/16 x 20-13/16inch) whereas Klipsch RP-5203C has external dimensions of 174.0 x 491.0 x 269.0mm (6-7/8 x 19-5/16 x 10-9/16inch).

Klipsch RP-5203C is 921mm shorter and 259mm less deeper than Klipsch RP-8263FA but it is also 216mm wider.

Base Surface Area Comparison
Base surface area of a loudspeaker may become a determining factor when the space in your room or desk is limited. The base surface area of the Klipsch RP-8263FA is approximately 1452.0cm2 / 225.1inch2 and base area of the Klipsch RP-5203C is approximately 1320.8cm2 / 204.7inch2. The RP-8263FA requires 10% more surface area than the RP-5203C which gives it a small disadvantage on placement in tight spaces.

Verdict

Siblings in Klipsch's Reference Premiere (RP) III series, so they share a family sound. It comes down to size, output and price.

AreaBetterWhy
BassAKlipsch RP-8263FA digs deeper - 35Hz against 56Hz.
Amplifier needsAKlipsch RP-8263FA is more sensitive (98dB vs 94dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier.
HeadroomAKlipsch RP-8263FA takes more power (150W vs 100W) - more in hand in a big room.
SizedependsKlipsch RP-5203C is easier to place; Klipsch RP-8263FA is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
TypedependsA Passive Floor-standing against a Passive Center Channel - a different job rather than a better one.
ExpandabilityAKlipsch RP-8263FA: bi-amping and Atmos drivers.
PriceBKlipsch RP-5203C is cheaper - $750 against $2,600, about 71% less; arguably a different class.

A Klipsch RP-8263FA  B Klipsch RP-5203C
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

The usual trade-off: Klipsch RP-8263FA measures better, Klipsch RP-5203C costs about about 3.5x the price% less. Whether that gap is worth the money is the call only you can make - and in a normal room it is often smaller than the numbers suggest. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 56Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper Klipsch RP-5203C much easier to justify. Match it to your room: we rate Klipsch RP-8263FA the better fit for a mid-size room and a large room, and Klipsch RP-5203C for near-field listening and a small room.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
