In this review, we will be comparing Alpha P5 and Alpha AM3, two Bookshelf speakers by PSB The main difference between these two speakers is that the PSB Alpha AM3 is a Powered speaker which means that it has a built-in amplifier inside the speaker body so you don't need an external power amp or an integrated amp whereas the PSB P5 is a Passive speaker so has to be matched with an amplifier to get any sound from it. Let's have a brief look at the main features

Alpha P5 features a 0.75" anodized aluminum Hard-Dome Tweeter and 1 x 5.25" Polypropylene Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2500Hz. On the other hand, the Alpha AM3 features a 0.75" Aluminum Hard-Dome Tweeter and 1 x 4" Polypropylene Woofer .
Frequency Response
Alpha P5 has a frequency range of 55-21k Hz whereas Alpha AM3 has a frequency range of 56-20k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 55Hz, the Alpha P5 can go slightly deeper then the Alpha AM3's min frequency of 56Hz.

Cabinet Type and Port Position
Both Alpha P5 and Alpha AM3 have rear firing ports. Rear ported speakers generally need more room between the backside of the speaker and the wall compared to sealed and front/bottom ported speakers. Placing the speakers too close to the walls may cause the bass to sound boomy.

Physical Specs
Size of a speaker can sometimes become an important decision factor due to space constraints or in some cases purely for esthetic reasons. In this section, we are going to compare PSB P5's and PSB Alpha AM3's external dimensions. PSB P5 has external dimensions of 289.0 x 172.0 x 254.0mm ( 11-3/8 x 6-3/4 x 10inch) whereas PSB Alpha AM3 has external dimensions of 220.7 x 131.8 x 206.4mm ( 8.6875 x 5.1875 x 8.125inch) .
PSB P5 is clearly the larger of the two speakers. Its body is 40.2mm wider, 68.3mm taller and 47.6mm deeper than PSB Alpha AM3.

The base surface area of the PSB P5 is approximately 436.9cm2 / 67.7inch2 and base area of the PSB Alpha AM3 is approximately 272.0cm2 / 42.2inch2. The Alpha P5 requires 61% more surface area than the Alpha AM3 which gives it a small disadvantage on placement in tight spaces.
