About Arcam

A&R Cambridge started in 1976 and its first product, the A60 integrated amplifier, stayed in production until 1989 and sold in enormous numbers for a small British firm. In 1988 Arcam released the Black Box, one of the first standalone digital-to-analogue converters aimed at ordinary buyers - the idea that you could keep a CD transport and upgrade only its conversion started here for a lot of people. Harman bought the company in 2017.

For a generation of British buyers in the 1980s the Arcam A60 was the amplifier you moved up to, and the shorthand advice of the era - a Rega turntable, an Arcam amplifier and a pair of small British monitors - put Arcam in the middle of the classic budget system.

Bought by Harman in 2017, so Arcam now shares a corporate parent with JBL, Mark Levinson and Revel.
