The Midgard is a headphone amplifier by Schiit Audio. It was released in 2024. The Midgard has an MSRP of $219.

Performance Specs

The Midgard drives headphones rather than loudspeakers, so its power is quoted into headphone impedances instead of into 8 ohms: 5.5 W @ 16 ohms, 4.8 W @ 32, 3.2 W @ 50, 750 mW @ 300, 375 mW @ 600. Its output impedance is 0.1 ohms - a low figure keeps the frequency response of a low-impedance headphone from being altered by the amplifier. Schiit Audio quotes a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of Less than 0.0001% (-118 dB) at 4 V RMS into 300 ohms, low gain (lower is better).

Here are the main highlights of its performance specs:

  • 128dB Signal to Noise Ratio

Inputs and Outputs

Besides the performance specs of the Midgard, the next important feature set that you have to evaluate is the input and output selections that it offers. Midgard has total of 2 Analog inputs .

Inputs
  • Total Number of Analog Inputs: 2

Outputs
  • Preamp Outputs
  • Balanced XLR Output
  • 1/4 Headphone Output

Balanced connections

Midgard has balanced XLR connections on both its input and its output. A balanced cable carries the signal twice, on two conductors of opposite polarity. Interference picked up along the way lands on both equally and cancels when the two are recombined at the far end, so the longer the cable run and the noisier the surroundings, the more the connection is worth. On a headphone output the other benefit is separation: a balanced connector gives each channel its own return conductor instead of the two sharing a common ground, which lowers crosstalk between left and right. Whether a balanced connection also yields more power depends on how the amplifier is built inside - some are balanced end to end, others convert to single-ended internally and deliver the same power either way, so it is worth reading the maker's own wording rather than assuming.

Midgard Pros and Cons

Drawn from the published figures on this page, not from listening.

  • ✓Output impedance of 0.1 ohms is low enough that it will not alter the frequency response of low-impedance headphones.
  • ✓Delivers 4,800 mW into 32 ohms, comfortably more than most headphones need.
  • ✓A preamp output means it can also feed active speakers or a power amplifier, so it is not limited to headphone listening.
  • ✗No DAC on board, so a digital source needs its own converter.
  • ✗It has no speaker terminals - this drives headphones, not loudspeakers.

Midgard External Dimensions and Weight

Midgard has external dimensions of (H x W x D) 1-1/2 x 9 x 6 inch (38.1 x 228.6 x 152.4 mm ). The unit weighs 0.91 kg (2 lbs).

Base Surface Area
Base surface area of an integrated amplifier may become an important decision factor when the space in your room or desk is limited. The base area of the Midgard is approximately 348.4cm2 / 54.0inch2.
