Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that Q8 Meta is a 2-way design whereas the Q7 Meta is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

Frequency Response

Q8 Meta has a frequency range of 105-20k Hz whereas Q7 Meta has a frequency range of 46-20k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 46Hz, the Q7 Meta can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the Q8 Meta's min frequency of 105Hz.

The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Surround class in our database.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Q8 Meta and Q7 Meta have the same Impedance of 4 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. Q8 Meta sensitivity is rated at 86 dB and the Q7 Meta's is at 87 dB. This 1 dB difference makes the KEF Q7 Meta a more sensitive speaker compared to KEF Q8 Meta, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

One thing to keep in mind that the lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit comared to higher impedance speakers especially at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Q8 Meta and the Q8 Meta can provide this impedance level.

Verdict

Siblings in KEF's Q Meta series, so they share a family sound. It comes down to size, output and price.

AreaBetterWhy
Bass B KEF Q7 Meta digs deeper - 46Hz against 105Hz.
Amplifier needs evenly matched Similar sensitivity (86dB vs 87dB) - both want much the same power.
Size depends KEF Q8 Meta is easier to place; KEF Q7 Meta is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
Type depends A Passive Surround against a Passive Floor-standing - a different job rather than a better one.
Cabinet depends Sealed vs Ported. Sealed is tighter and happier near a wall; ported digs lower but wants space behind it.
Price A KEF Q8 Meta is cheaper - $900 against $1,800, about 50% less; arguably a different class.

A KEF Q8 Meta   B KEF Q7 Meta
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, placement or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

KEF Q7 Meta is ahead, but only on 1 of the measured areas, and it costs about 50% more. That is a lot of money for a narrow margin on paper - KEF Q8 Meta looks like the sensible buy unless something else about the KEF Q7 Meta appeals to you. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 105Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper KEF Q8 Meta much easier to justify. In a large or open-plan room, KEF Q7 Meta has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, KEF Q8 Meta is the easier speaker to get right.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
