5090 features a 1" Soft-dome Tweeter and 2 x 4.5" Coated paper Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2100 Hz. On the other hand, the 5040 features a 1" Soft-dome Tweeter and 2 x 5" Continuous Curved Cone Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2500 Hz.
Frequency Response
5090 has a frequency range of 57-30k Hz whereas 5040 has a frequency range of 39-30k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 39Hz, the 5040 can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the 5090's min frequency of 57Hz.

Impedance and Sensitivity
5090 and 5040 have the same Impedance of 6 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. 5090 sensitivity is rated at 90.5 dB and the 5040's is at 91.5 dB. This 1 dB difference makes the Q Acoustics 5040 a more sensitive speaker compared to Q Acoustics 5090, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power
range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying
within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.
5090 and 5040 have the same power range of 25-150 watts.
Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on

Cabinet Type and Port Position
Both 5090 and 5040 have rear firing ports. Rear ported speakers generally need more room between the backside of the speaker and the wall compared to sealed and front/bottom ported speakers. Placing the speakers too close to the walls may cause the bass to sound boomy.
