Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Cabinet Type and Port Position

Both Alpha AM5 and Alpha T20 have rear firing ports. Rear ported speakers generally need more room between the backside of the speaker and the wall compared to sealed and front/bottom ported speakers. Placing the speakers too close to the walls may cause the bass to sound boomy.

If you are limited in space and can't get the speakers away from the backwall, check our Speakers with Front Firing Ports page.

Physical Specs

Verdict

Different kinds of product: one is active with its amplifier built in, the other passive and needs one. Judge them on how you want to own the system, not just the specs.

AreaBetterWhy
BassBPSB Alpha T20 digs deeper - 36Hz against 55Hz.
What you buydependsPSB Alpha AM5 is a complete system - just add a source. PSB Alpha T20 also needs an amplifier: more money and another box, but you choose it.
ConnectionsdependsPSB Alpha AM5 has Bluetooth and phono built in. With PSB Alpha T20 that all comes from the amplifier you pair it with.
Upgrade pathdependsPSB Alpha T20 can be re-amped later and outlive several amplifiers; PSB Alpha AM5 ages as one unit.
SizedependsPSB Alpha AM5 is easier to place; PSB Alpha T20 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
TypedependsA Powered Bookshelf against a Passive Floor-standing - a different job rather than a better one.
ExpandabilityBPSB Alpha T20: bi-amping.
PriceAPSB Alpha AM5 is cheaper - $599 against $799, about 25% less. And that is the whole system.

A PSB Alpha AM5  B PSB Alpha T20
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

PSB Alpha AM5 suits you if you want one box, ready to play, with nothing else to buy. PSB Alpha T20 suits you if you already have an amplifier, want to choose the electronics, or expect to upgrade in stages. Neither is the better speaker in the abstract. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 55Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper PSB Alpha AM5 much easier to justify. In a large or open-plan room, PSB Alpha T20 has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, PSB Alpha AM5 is the easier speaker to get right.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
