Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that R8 Meta is a 2-way design whereas the R2 Meta is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

R8 Meta features a 1" Hard-Dome Tweeter and 1 x 5.25" Woofer. On the other hand, the R2 Meta features a 1" Aluminum with MAT absorber Hard-Dome Tweeter, a 5" Midrange and 2 x 5.25" Hybrid Aluminum Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 560Hz and 2500Hz.

Frequency Response

R8 Meta has a frequency range of 97-17.5k Hz whereas R2 Meta has a frequency range of 67-28k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 67Hz, the R2 Meta can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the R8 Meta's min frequency of 97Hz.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. Impedance and Sensitivity

R8 Meta and R2 Meta have the same Impedance of 4 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. R8 Meta sensitivity is rated at 85 dB and the R2 Meta's is at 87 dB. This 2 dB difference makes the KEF R2 Meta a more sensitive speaker compared to KEF R8 Meta, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

One thing to keep in mind that the lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit comared to higher impedance speakers especially at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the R8 Meta and the R8 Meta can provide this impedance level.

depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

KEF R2 Meta is the easier recommendation: it leads on most of the measured areas and costs less. Take KEF R8 Meta if its size, looks or fit in your room suit you better. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 97Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. In a large or open-plan room, KEF R2 Meta has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, KEF R8 Meta is the easier speaker to get right.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
