Balanced connections

Advance Paris A12 APEX has balanced XLR connections and Arcam SA45 does not. A balanced cable carries the signal twice, on two conductors of opposite polarity. Interference picked up along the way lands on both equally and cancels when the two are recombined at the far end, so the longer the cable run and the noisier the surroundings, the more it is worth. Whether it also yields more power depends on how the amplifier is built inside - some are balanced end to end, others convert to single-ended internally and deliver the same either way.

Verdict

A valve amplifier against a solid-state one. They are not really rivals: they differ in character, in what they will drive and in what owning them involves, so start there rather than with the watts.

AreaBetterWhy
Powerevenly matchedEffectively the same output - 180W against 190W into 8 ohms is under 1dB, which is not an audible difference in loudness.
Grip on hard loadsevenly matchedBoth behave much the same into 4 ohms - output increases strongly (300W and 292W).
Noise floorAArcam SA45 is the quieter design on paper - 110dB against 104dB. Audible mainly with sensitive speakers in a quiet room.
Built-in DACABoth decode on board. Arcam SA45 goes higher - 384kHz against 192kHz. Very few recordings exist above 192kHz, so treat this as headroom, not as sound quality.
StreamingAOnly Arcam SA45 has AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Roon.
Room to growBOnly Advance Paris A12 APEX offers a pre-out/main-in loop - which decides whether you can add a subwoofer or a power amplifier later without replacing the box.
Room correctionAArcam SA45 has room correction. In an awkward room that does more for the sound than any other difference on this page.
HeadphonesdependsOnly Advance Paris A12 APEX has a headphone output. Worth something if you listen late, nothing if you never do.
Amplifier typedependsArcam SA45 is Solid State and Advance Paris A12 APEX is Hybrid. Valve designs are usually warmer and softer at the limits and need their tubes replaced eventually; solid state is the lower-maintenance choice. This is a taste and ownership decision, not a quality one.
PriceBAdvance Paris A12 APEX costs less - $4,999 against $5,500 at list.

A Arcam SA45  B Advance Paris A12 APEX
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both amplifiers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Arcam SA45 leads across most of the measured areas for a fairly modest premium, so it is the easier pick if the budget stretches. Advance Paris A12 APEX is the one to take if it does not.

What a spec sheet cannot show: how either sounds with your speakers, how the controls feel day to day, and what the app is like to live with - which is where most all-in-one amplifiers are actually won or lost. Power figures are the manufacturers' own and are not measured to a common standard, so treat small differences as noise. If you can hear both, that will tell you more than any row above.
