Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that NS-555 is a 3-way design whereas the NS-C444 is a 2-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

NS-555 has a frequency range of 35-35k Hz whereas NS-C444 has a frequency range of 55-35k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 35Hz, the NS-555 can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the NS-C444's min frequency of 55Hz.

Impedance and Sensitivity

NS-555 and NS-C444 have the same Impedance of 6 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. NS-555 sensitivity is rated at 88 dB and the NS-C444's is at 89 dB. This 1 dB difference makes the Yamaha NS-C444 a more sensitive speaker compared to Yamaha NS-555, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

That is a lot of money for a narrow margin on paper - Yamaha NS-C444 looks like the sensible buy unless something else about the Yamaha NS-555 appeals to you. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 55Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper Yamaha NS-C444 much easier to justify.
