Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that EVO4.2 is a 3-way design whereas the Motion 35XTi is a 2-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

Driver Wharfedale EVO4.2 MartinLogan 35XTi
Driver Setup 3-way 2-way
Tweeter 1.18x2.36-inch 1.25 x 2.4-inch
Midrange 1 x 2-inch -
Woofer 1 x 6.5-inch 1 x 6.5-inch

EVO4.2 features a 1.18x2.36" AMT (Ribbon) Tweeter , a 2" Midrange and 1 x 6.5" Kevlar Woofer . On the other hand, the Motion 35XTi features a 1.25 x 2.4" Folded Motion XT Tweeter and 1 x 6.5" Aluminum Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2200Hz.

Frequency Response

EVO4.2 has a frequency range of 54-22k Hz whereas Motion 35XTi has a frequency range of 50-25k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 50Hz, the Motion 35XTi can go slightly deeper then the EVO4.2's min frequency of 54Hz.

Lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit especially when played at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Motion 35XTi can provide this impedance level.

These two speakers also have different sensitivity levels. EVO4.2 sensitivity is rated at 88 dB and the Motion 35XTi's is rated at 92 dB. This 4 dB difference makes the MartinLogan 35XTi a more sensitive speaker compared to Wharfedale EVO4.2, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

EVO4.2 can handle a max power of 250 watts RMS from the amp the whereas EVO4.2 has a max power handling value of 120 watts RMS , 130 watts less than the Motion 35XTi.

Keep in mind that a higher max power handling value doesn't necessarily make that a louder speaker compared to a lower max handling speaker. Loudness or the sound level is also impacted by parameters such as Impedance, sensitivity and system efficiencies.
