Frequency Response

Synchrony T600 has a frequency range of 24-23k Hz whereas VELA FS 407 has a frequency range of 30-50k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 24Hz, the Synchrony T600 can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the VELA FS 407's min frequency of 30Hz.

The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Floor-standing class in our database.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Synchrony T600 and VELA FS 407 have the same Impedance of 4 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. Synchrony T600 sensitivity is rated at 89 dB and the VELA FS 407's is at 88 dB. This 1 dB difference makes the PSB Synchrony T600 a more sensitive speaker compared to ELAC VELA FS 407, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

One thing to keep in mind that the lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit comared to higher impedance speakers especially at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Synchrony T600 and the Synchrony T600 can provide this impedance level.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

Synchrony T600 can handle a max power of 300 watts RMS, whereas VELA FS 407 has a max power handling value of 130 watts RMS, 170 watts less than the Synchrony T600.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Which plays louder on your amplifier?

Verdict

A generation apart: PSB Synchrony T600 is the newer design, against a 2018 model. Newer is not automatically better, but the older one is more likely to be discounted or near run-out.

AreaBetterWhy
Bass A PSB Synchrony T600 digs deeper - 24Hz against 30Hz. A subwoofer would even that out.
Amplifier needs evenly matched Similar sensitivity (89dB vs 88dB) - both want much the same power.
Headroom A PSB Synchrony T600 takes more power (300W vs 130W) - more in hand in a big room.
Size depends ELAC VELA FS 407 is easier to place; PSB Synchrony T600 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
Expandability depends PSB Synchrony T600: bi-amping; ELAC VELA FS 407: bi-amping.
Price B ELAC VELA FS 407 is cheaper - $5,800 against $8,000, about 28% less.

A PSB Synchrony T600   B ELAC VELA FS 407
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, placement or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

The usual trade-off: PSB Synchrony T600 measures better, ELAC VELA FS 407 costs about 28% less. Whether that gap is worth the money is the call only you can make - and in a normal room it is often smaller than the numbers suggest. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 30Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper ELAC VELA FS 407 much easier to justify. Match it to your room: we rate PSB Synchrony T600 the better fit for a very large room, and ELAC VELA FS 407 for a mid-size room.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
