Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

Ai81 can handle a max power of 150 watts RMS, whereas Ai61 has a max power handling value of 120 watts RMS, 30 watts less than the Ai81.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Cabinet Type and Port Position

Ai81 has a bottom firing port whereas Ai61 has a rear firing ports. Fluance Ai81's bottom-firing port gives more flexibility in placement in regards to proximity to walls compared to Fluance Ai61 with its rear-firing port.

Physical Specs

Fluance Ai81 is clearly the larger of the two speakers. Its body is 18mm wider, 627mm taller and 26mm deeper than Fluance Ai61.

The base surface area of the Fluance Ai81 is approximately 561.0cm2 / 87.0inch2 and base area of the Fluance Ai61 is approximately 463.0cm2 / 71.8inch2. The Ai81 requires 21% more surface area than the Ai61 which gives it a small disadvantage on placement in tight spaces.

Verdict

Siblings in Fluance's Ai series, so they share a family sound. It comes down to size, output and price.

AreaBetterWhy
Bassevenly matchedMuch the same reach (30Hz vs 32Hz).
Built-in powerAFluance Ai81 has the bigger amplifier (150W vs 120W RMS).
Connectionsevenly matchedThe same set of inputs and streaming options.
SizedependsFluance Ai61 is easier to place; Fluance Ai81 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
TypedependsA Powered Floor-standing against a Powered Bookshelf - a different job rather than a better one.
ExpandabilitydependsFluance Ai81: a sub output; Fluance Ai61: a sub output.
PriceBFluance Ai61 is cheaper - $299 against $499, about 40% less; arguably a different class.

A Fluance Ai81  B Fluance Ai61
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Fluance Ai81 is ahead, but only on 1 of the measured areas, and it costs about 67% more. That is a lot of money for a narrow margin on paper - Fluance Ai61 looks like the sensible buy unless something else about the Fluance Ai81 appeals to you. In a large or open-plan room, Fluance Ai81 has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, Fluance Ai61 is the easier speaker to get right. Think about the whole system, not just the speakers: the roughly $200 saved by taking the cheaper pair would buy a subwoofer or a better amplifier, and either usually does more for the sound than the difference between these two.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
