ATC SCM20ASLT vs Klipsch La Scala AL5 Speaker Comparison

In this review, we will be comparing SCM20ASLT and La Scala AL5, two Floor-standing speakers from ATC and Klipsch. The main difference between these two speakers is that the ATC SCM20ASLT is a Powered speaker which means that it has a built-in amplifier inside the speaker body so you don't need an external power amp or an integrated amp whereas the Klipsch La Scala AL5 is a Passive speaker so has to be matched with an amplifier to get any sound from it.

Let's have a brief look at the main features of ATC SCM20ASLT and Klipsch La Scala AL5 first before getting into our more detailed comparison.

The sections below take each area in turn: drivers, frequency response, physical size and what you get in the box.

Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that SCM20ASLT is a 2-way design whereas the La Scala AL5 is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

Driver ATC SCM20ASLT Klipsch La Scala AL5
Driver Setup 2-way 3-way
Tweeter -inch 1-inch
Midrange - 1 x 2-inch
Woofer 1 x -inch 1 x 15-inch

SCM20ASLT features a " Tweeter and 1 x " Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2.2kHz. On the other hand, the La Scala AL5 features a 1" polyimide diaphragm compression horn-loaded Tweeter, a 2" Midrange and 1 x 15" fiber-composite cone with folded horn Woofer.

Frequency Response

SCM20ASLT has a frequency range of 55-25k Hz whereas La Scala AL5 has a frequency range of 51-20k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 51Hz, the La Scala AL5 can go slightly deeper then the SCM20ASLT's min frequency of 55Hz.

The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Floor-standing class in our database.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

SCM20ASLT can handle a max power of 300 watts RMS, whereas La Scala AL5 has a max power handling value of 100 watts RMS, 200 watts less than the SCM20ASLT.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Input Type and Bi-Amping / Bi-Wiring

La Scala AL5 features Binding post posts which make bi-amping or bi-wiring possible. SCM20ASLT has a 1 x Rear Panel Mounted Female XLR, pin 2 hot which doesn't feature bi-amping/bi-wiring.

Physical Specs

The size of a speaker can sometimes be an important decision factor due to space constraints or in some cases purely for esthetic reasons. In this section, we are going to compare ATC SCM20ASLT's and Klipsch La Scala AL5's external dimensions. ATC SCM20ASLT has external dimensions of 990.0 x 239.0 x 366.0mm (38.98 x 9.41 x 14.41inch) whereas Klipsch La Scala AL5 has external dimensions of 1016.0 x 616.0 x 643.0mm (40 x 24-1/4 x 25-5/16inch).

Klipsch La Scala AL5 is clearly the larger of the two speakers. Its body is 377mm wider, 26mm taller and 277mm deeper than ATC SCM20ASLT.

Both speakers and both views share one scale, so everything here is directly comparable. Hover a box for its dimensions.

One scale for both, standing on the same surface and pushed back to the same wall, so the deeper one visibly sticks out further.

Klipsch La Scala AL5 needs about 353% more floor or shelf area. Klipsch La Scala AL5 is 277mm deeper, so it stands that much further out from the wall. Klipsch La Scala AL5 is 26mm taller.

Base Surface Area Comparison

Verdict

Different kinds of product: one is active with its amplifier built in, the other passive and needs one. Judge them on how you want to own the system, not just the specs.

AreaBetterWhy
BassBKlipsch La Scala AL5 digs deeper - 51Hz against 55Hz. A subwoofer would even that out.
What you buydependsATC SCM20ASLT is a complete system - just add a source. Klipsch La Scala AL5 also needs an amplifier: more money and another box, but you choose it.
ConnectionsdependsWith Klipsch La Scala AL5 that all comes from the amplifier you pair it with.
Upgrade pathdependsKlipsch La Scala AL5 can be re-amped later and outlive several amplifiers; ATC SCM20ASLT ages as one unit.
SizedependsATC SCM20ASLT is easier to place; Klipsch La Scala AL5 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
ExpandabilityBKlipsch La Scala AL5: bi-amping.
Priceevenly matchedMuch the same money ($12,499 vs $12,998 a pair) - though the passive pair still needs an amplifier.

A ATC SCM20ASLT  B Klipsch La Scala AL5
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

ATC SCM20ASLT suits you if you want one box, ready to play, with nothing else to buy. Klipsch La Scala AL5 suits you if you already have an amplifier, want to choose the electronics, or expect to upgrade in stages. Neither is the better speaker in the abstract. In a large or open-plan room, Klipsch La Scala AL5 has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, ATC SCM20ASLT is the easier speaker to get right.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
