The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Bookshelf class in our database.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Dovedale is a 6.5 ohms speaker compared to the La Scala AL5 which has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms.

These two speakers also have different sensitivity levels. Dovedale sensitivity is rated at 89 DB and the La Scala AL5's is rated at 105 dB. This 16 dB difference makes the Klipsch La Scala AL5 a more sensitive speaker compared to Wharfedale Dovedale, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

Dovedale can handle a max power of 250 watts RMS, whereas La Scala AL5 has a max power handling value of 100 watts RMS, 150 watts less than the Dovedale.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Which plays louder on your amplifier?

Starting with a popular amplifier - change it to the one you own, or any you are considering, and watch both numbers move.

Verdict

A bookshelf against a floor-standing. They are built for different places in a room, so start with where these have to go rather than which looks better on paper.

AreaBetterWhy
BassAWharfedale Dovedale digs deeper - 36Hz against 51Hz.
Amplifier needsBKlipsch La Scala AL5 is more sensitive (105dB vs 89dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier.
Amplifier matchBKlipsch La Scala AL5 is the easier load at 8 ohms.
HeadroomAWharfedale Dovedale takes more power (250W vs 100W) - more in hand in a big room.
SizedependsWharfedale Dovedale is easier to place; Klipsch La Scala AL5 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
TypedependsA Passive Bookshelf against a Passive Floor-standing - a different job rather than a better one.
CabinetdependsPorted vs Sealed. Sealed is tighter and happier near a wall; ported digs lower but wants space behind it.
ExpandabilitydependsWharfedale Dovedale: bi-amping; Klipsch La Scala AL5: bi-amping. Klipsch La Scala AL5 sits in a wider range (12 models), so a matched surround system is easier later.
PriceAWharfedale Dovedale is cheaper - $5,000 against $12,998, about 62% less; arguably a different class.

A Wharfedale Dovedale  B Klipsch La Scala AL5
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Neither runs away with it - they trade advantages. Let the "depends" rows and your own room settle it. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 51Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. In a large or open-plan room, Klipsch La Scala AL5 has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, Wharfedale Dovedale is the easier speaker to get right.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
