Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that AURA 1 is a 2-way design whereas the LINTON Heritage is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

AURA 1 features a 1.0625 x 3.5" AMT (Ribbon) Tweeter and 1 x 5" Glass Fiber Matrix Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 2.9kHz. On the other hand, the LINTON Heritage features a 1" woven textile Soft-dome Tweeter, a 5" Midrange and 1 x 8" Woven Kevlar Woofer with a Crossover frequency at 630Hz and 2400Hz.

Frequency Response

AURA 1 has a frequency range of 48-22k Hz whereas LINTON Heritage has a frequency range of 40-20k Hz. With a minimum frequency of 40Hz, the LINTON Heritage can go significantly deeper on the low side and provide stronger bass compared to the AURA 1's min frequency of 48Hz.

The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Bookshelf class in our database.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

AURA 1 and LINTON Heritage have the same Impedance of 6 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. AURA 1 sensitivity is rated at 86 dB and the LINTON Heritage's is at 90 dB. This 4 dB difference makes the Wharfedale LINTON a more sensitive speaker compared to Wharfedale AURA 1, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

LINTON Heritage can handle a max power of 200 watts RMS, whereas AURA 1 has a max power handling value of 100 watts RMS, 100 watts less than the LINTON Heritage.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Which plays louder on your amplifier?

Verdict

A generation apart: Wharfedale AURA 1 is the newer design, against a 2017 model. Newer is not automatically better, but the older one is more likely to be discounted or near run-out.

AreaBetterWhy
Bass B Wharfedale LINTON digs deeper - 40Hz against 48Hz. A subwoofer would even that out.
Amplifier needs B Wharfedale LINTON is more sensitive (90dB vs 86dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier.
Headroom B Wharfedale LINTON takes more power (200W vs 100W) - more in hand in a big room.
Size depends Wharfedale AURA 1 is easier to place; Wharfedale LINTON is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
Expandability A Wharfedale AURA 1: bi-amping.
Price B Wharfedale LINTON is cheaper - $1,500 against $1,999, about 25% less.

A Wharfedale AURA 1   B Wharfedale LINTON
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, placement or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Wharfedale LINTON is the easier recommendation: it leads on most of the measured areas and costs less. Take Wharfedale AURA 1 if its size, looks or fit in your room suit you better. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 48Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. Match it to your room: we rate Wharfedale AURA 1 the better fit for near-field listening and a small room, and Wharfedale LINTON for a mid-size room and a large room.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
