The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Bookshelf class in our database.
Low Frequency
Bookshelf Speakers
Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.
Impedance and Sensitivity
Premier 220B v2 and 607 S2 AE have the same Impedance of 8 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. Premier 220B v2 sensitivity is rated at 91 dB and the 607 S2 AE's is at 84 dB. This 7 dB difference makes the Paradigm Premier 220B v2 a more sensitive speaker compared to B&W 607 S2, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range
Power
range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying
within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.
Premier 220B v2 can handle a max power of 130 watts RMS, whereas 607 S2 AE has a max power handling value of 100 watts RMS, 30 watts less than the Premier 220B v2.
Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on
sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays
on a real amplifier.
Which plays louder on your amplifier?
Starting with a popular amplifier - change it to the one you own, or any you are
considering, and watch both numbers move.
Input Type and Bi-Amping / Bi-Wiring
607 S2 AE features Binding post posts which make bi-amping or bi-wiring possible. Premier 220B v2 has a Binding post which doesn't feature bi-amping/bi-wiring.

Here is another comparison that shows both speakers on a BDI Octave Media Cabinet, next to a standard size amplifier and turntable in scale:

A generation apart: Paradigm Premier 220B v2 is the newer design, against a 2020 model. Newer is not automatically better, but the older one is more likely to be discounted or near run-out.
| Area | Better | Why |
|---|
| Bass | B | B&W 607 S2 digs deeper - 52Hz against 58Hz. A subwoofer would even that out. |
| Amplifier needs | A | Paradigm Premier 220B v2 is more sensitive (91dB vs 84dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier. |
| Headroom | A | Paradigm Premier 220B v2 takes more power (130W vs 100W) - more in hand in a big room. |
| Size | depends | B&W 607 S2 is easier to place; Paradigm Premier 220B v2 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides. |
| Expandability | depends | B&W 607 S2: bi-amping. Paradigm Premier 220B v2 sits in a wider range (12 models), so a matched surround system is easier later. |
| Price | B | B&W 607 S2 is cheaper - $799 against $1,100, about 27% less. |
A Paradigm Premier 220B v2 B B&W 607 S2
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.
Which should you choose?
Paradigm Premier 220B v2 is ahead, but only on 1 of the measured areas, and it costs about 38% more. That is a lot of money for a narrow margin on paper - B&W 607 S2 looks like the sensible buy unless something else about the Paradigm Premier 220B v2 appeals to you. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 58Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. In a large or open-plan room, Paradigm Premier 220B v2 has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, B&W 607 S2 is the easier speaker to get right.
And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
