Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Aspen FR10 is a 4 ohms speaker compared to the Silver 500 7G which has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. Lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit especially when played at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Aspen FR10 can provide this impedance level.

These two speakers also have different sensitivity levels. Aspen FR10 sensitivity is rated at 86.5 dB and the Silver 500 7G's is rated at 90.5 dB. This 4 dB difference makes the Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G a more sensitive speaker compared to PS Audio Aspen FR10, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

Silver 500 7G can handle a max power of 250 watts RMS, whereas Aspen FR10 has a max power handling value of 200 watts RMS, 50 watts less than the Silver 500 7G.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Headroom B Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G takes more power (250W vs 200W) - more in hand in a big room.
Size depends Similar cabinet size - neither is easier to fit.
Cabinet depends Passive Radiator vs Ported.

A PS Audio Aspen FR10   B Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, placement or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G is the easier recommendation: it leads on most of the measured areas and costs less. Take PS Audio Aspen FR10 if its size, looks or fit in your room suit you better. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 32Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. Match it to your room: we rate PS Audio Aspen FR10 the better fit for a small room and a mid-size room, and Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G for a large room and a very large room.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
