Drivers

One of the fundamental differences between these two speakers is that Renaissance ESL 15A is a 2-way design whereas the Sopra No.3 is a 3-way speaker. 3-way designs utilize a midrange driver in addition to the tweeter and woofer on 2-way designs. Designing a crossover for a 3-way speaker is a complicated process and generally increases the overall cost of the speaker.

Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Renaissance ESL 15A is a 4 ohms speaker compared to the Sopra No.3 which has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. Lower impedance speakers, especially the ones that are rated at 4 ohms may put more pressure on the amplifier unit especially when played at high volume levels, so make sure the amp you pair with the Renaissance ESL 15A can provide this impedance level.

These two speakers also have different sensitivity levels. Renaissance ESL 15A sensitivity is rated at 92 dB and the Sopra No.3's is rated at 91.5 dB.

Renaissance ESL 15A can handle a max power of 700 watts RMS, whereas Sopra No.3 has a max power handling value of 400 watts RMS, 300 watts less than the Renaissance ESL 15A.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Input Type and Bi-Amping / Bi-Wiring

Renaissance ESL 15A features Binding post type posts and Sopra No.3 has a Binding post type posts. None of these speakers feature bi-amping/bi-wiring.

Verdict

Different kinds of product: one is active with its amplifier built in, the other passive and needs one. Judge them on how you want to own the system, not just the specs.

AreaBetterWhy
BassAMartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A digs deeper - 22Hz against 33Hz.
What you buydependsMartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A is a complete system - just add a source. Focal Sopra No.3 also needs an amplifier: more money and another box, but you choose it.
ConnectionsdependsWith Focal Sopra No.3 that all comes from the amplifier you pair it with.
Upgrade pathdependsFocal Sopra No.3 can be re-amped later and outlive several amplifiers; MartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A ages as one unit.
SizedependsFocal Sopra No.3 is easier to place; MartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
CabinetdependsDipole vs Ported.
ExpandabilitydependsNeither adds bi-amping, a sub output or height drivers. MartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A sits in a wider range (7 models), so a matched surround system is easier later.
Priceevenly matchedMuch the same money ($29,000 vs $27,998 a pair) - though the passive pair still needs an amplifier.

A MartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A  B Focal Sopra No.3
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

MartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A suits you if you want one box, ready to play, with nothing else to buy. Focal Sopra No.3 suits you if you already have an amplifier, want to choose the electronics, or expect to upgrade in stages. Neither is the better speaker in the abstract. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 33Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. Match it to your room: we rate MartinLogan Renaissance ESL 15A the better fit for a very large room; elsewhere the two are rated the same.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
