Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

Impedance and Sensitivity

Kendall and Aria 948 have the same Impedance of 8 ohms but where they differ is the sensitivity levels. Kendall sensitivity is rated at 96 dB and the Aria 948's is at 92.5 dB. This 3 dB difference makes the KLH Kendall a more sensitive speaker compared to Focal Aria 948, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range

Power range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.

Aria 948 can handle a max power of 350 watts RMS, whereas Kendall has a max power handling value of 250 watts RMS, 100 watts less than the Aria 948.

Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays on a real amplifier.

Physical Specs

The size of a speaker can sometimes be an important decision factor due to space constraints or in some cases purely for esthetic reasons. In this section, we are going to compare KLH Kendall's and Focal Aria 948's external dimensions. KLH Kendall has external dimensions of 1021.0 x 212.0 x 380.0mm (40-3/16 x 8-5/16 x 14-15/16inch) whereas Focal Aria 948 has external dimensions of 1150.0 x 372.0 x 421.0mm (45-1/4 x 14-5/8 x 16-9/16inch).

Focal Aria 948 is clearly the larger of the two speakers. Its body is 160mm wider, 129mm taller and 41mm deeper than KLH Kendall.

The base surface area of the KLH Kendall is approximately 805.6cm2 / 124.9inch2 and base area of the Focal Aria 948 is approximately 1566.1cm2 / 242.7inch2. The Kendall requires 49% less surface area than the Aria 948 which gives it a small advantage on placement in tight spaces.

Weight Comparison

Verdict

These sit in different price classes - Focal Aria 948 costs roughly 4.4x what KLH Kendall does. Expect it to lead on paper; the question is whether the gap is audible enough in your room to be worth it.

AreaBetterWhy
BassAKLH Kendall digs deeper - 25Hz against 37Hz.
Amplifier needsAKLH Kendall is more sensitive (96dB vs 93dB), so it goes louder on the same amplifier.
HeadroomBFocal Aria 948 takes more power (350W vs 250W) - more in hand in a big room.
SizedependsKLH Kendall is easier to place; Focal Aria 948 is bigger, which usually goes with fuller bass. Your room decides.
ExpandabilitydependsKLH Kendall: bi-amping. Focal Aria 948 sits in a wider range (7 models), so a matched surround system is easier later.
PriceAKLH Kendall is cheaper - $1,500 against $6,598, about 77% less; arguably a different class.

A KLH Kendall  B Focal Aria 948
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, your system or how you will use them. Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.

Which should you choose?

KLH Kendall has the edge on paper, though the margin is not large. The rows marked "depends" may matter more to you than the score does. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 37Hz anyway, so judge these on the other rows instead. In a large or open-plan room, Focal Aria 948 has the cabinet volume to fill it more easily; in a small room, near a wall or at desk distance, KLH Kendall is the easier speaker to get right.

And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
