The graph below depicts how these two speakers compare with the max, min and average Low Frequency values of other speakers in the Center Channel class in our database.
Low Frequency
Center Channel Speakers
Neither pair reaches down to 20Hz, the usual definition of full-range, which is normal for speakers of this size. If you want the bottom octave for movies or bass-heavy music, add a subwoofer to whichever you choose. Visit our Powered Subwoofers section to find out more about the available options.

This 1 dB difference makes the GoldenEar SuperCenter X a more sensitive speaker compared to Definitive CS-9040, hence will play louder with the same amount of watts.

Power Range
Power
range is the range of input power in watts RMS that a loudspeaker is designed to handle. Staying
within that range gives nominal performance; driving the speaker beyond its maximum wattage can damage it.
Both handle the same maximum of 200 watts RMS, though SuperCenter X is rated 20-200 watts and CS-9040 50-200 watts.
Note that higher power handling does not make a speaker louder: that depends mainly on
sensitivity and impedance. The calculator below shows how loud each of these actually plays
on a real amplifier.
Which plays louder on your amplifier?
Starting with a popular amplifier — change it to the one you own, or any you are
considering, and watch both numbers move.
Input Type and Bi-Amping / Bi-Wiring
SuperCenter X features 5-Way post type posts and CS-9040 has a 5-Way post type posts. None of these speakers feature bi-amping/bi-wiring.

No single best speaker here - they are built to different priorities, and the right one depends on your room, your amplifier and what you listen to.
| Area | Better | Why |
| Bass |
A |
GoldenEar SuperCenter X digs deeper - 45Hz against 50Hz. A subwoofer would even that out. |
| Amplifier needs |

Similar sensitivity (90dB vs 89dB) - both want much the same power. |
| Headroom |

Similar power handling (200W vs 200W). |
| Size |

Similar cabinet size - neither is easier to fit. |
| Price |

Definitive CS-9040 is cheaper - $549 against $749, about 27% less. |
A GoldenEar SuperCenter X
B Definitive CS-9040
depends neither is better in the abstract - it turns on your room, placement or how you will use them.
Only specs published for both speakers are judged; anything missing on either side is left out rather than guessed.
Which should you choose?
GoldenEar SuperCenter X is ahead, but only on 1 of the measured areas, and it costs about 27% more. That is a lot of money for a narrow margin on paper - Definitive CS-9040 looks like the sensible buy unless something else about the GoldenEar SuperCenter X appeals to you. If a subwoofer is in your plans, the bass gap largely stops mattering - you would be crossing over above 50Hz anyway, which makes the cheaper Definitive CS-9040 much easier to justify. Think about the whole system, not just the speakers: the roughly $200 saved by taking the cheaper pair would buy a subwoofer or a better amplifier, and either usually does more for the sound than the difference between these two.
And remember what a spec sheet cannot show: how each looks in your room and whether the finish suits it, what dealer support and warranty are like where you live, and how they actually sound to you. If you can hear them first - ideally with your own music - that will tell you more than any number above.
